Newborn photography really isn’t as hard or as complicated as it sounds.

Oxfordshire based newborn photographerBut then again, at the same time, it isn’t all that easy as well. Not all photographers out there will be able to pull off this particular niche in photography and for a fairly good reason. Newborn babies are adorable and all that but there is a lot of technique and patience going around something like this and this is the type of thing that you will need to go head and take into account one way or the other. You need to really go for a photographer who has had quite some time in shooting newborn photo shoots. If you are looking for an Oxfordshire based newborn photographer in particular, then you should seriously start thinking about the aspect of starting your search early on. Don’t be taken by just lip service. You need some serious proof of what someone can do. Take a look at his portfolio as much as possible and try to see if this is the type of thing that you will be able to work with at the end of the day.

You need a photographer who has the patience to deal with things.

Normally, this is something that you will be able to gauge based off of how he talks, how he handles himself, how he handles inquiries, especially numerous ones. Don’t be afraid if you might come off as someone who looks and sounds a little bit annoying at times. This is something forgivable and this is something that you can pull off. You will turn out to be a paying client after all and as someone who is well worth looking into things, that photographer that you are thinking about getting for the job should be able to handle you. If he can’t, then he probably can’t handle the aspect of dealing with a newborn photo shoot to begin with and you probably should not go hire him in the first place.

Go with someone who has a pretty clear view or insight about what he is planning to do for the newborn photo shoot.

If you talk to a person and he happens to turn out to be just as clueless as you are, then it probably won’t work out as well as you would like it to at the end of the day. You need someone who really knows his craft and who is confident and isn’t afraid to talk about it at some point or so. You will only be able to pull something like this off if you manage to hire a professional newborn photographer who really knows what he is doing and who will be able to follow through on anything and everything that he ends up promising out to you at some point or so. Get this checked out as much as possible and things are bound to work out in your favor as a doting and expecting parent who wants to have great pictures of his or her newborn baby.

Newborn photography is no different from other types of photography.  It is an equally important photo shoot where preparedness is a must. As a professional photographer, you cannot just accept the task without knowing what to bring or how to do it. Newborn photography requires technical skills, passion, patience and love for babies. Successful newborn photographers can attest to how important it is for a photographer to like their subject – the newborn baby. A baby is a prized possession of parents. Parents would want to keep the precious moments of their newborn in a photo album.

newborn photographyNewborn photo shoots usually takes place when a baby is less than two weeks. There are many types of newborn photography but the 2 main types are posed and lifestyle or photojournalistic.

Posed or Lifestyle?

Posed newborn photography is often done in a photo studio. The scenes are planned and the whole photo shoot usually takes 3 to 4 hours with breaks in between. Nowadays, posed photo sessions can be done in a client’s home. A location within the home is usually set up for the newborn photo session.

Lifestyle, on the other hand, is done in the comforts of a client’s house. Moments are captured in a natural way. It can be when the baby is sleeping, being fed or carried by a parent. You can include the siblings (if there’s any) or the mom or dad of the newborn in some of the pictures.

If you are new to newborn photography, below are some top tips that you can apply when photographing newborns.

  1. Be Flexible and Open-Minded

Once the parents have contacted you for the job, ask them important questions like:

  • What do you expect from this photo shoot?
  • Where are you going to use the photos?

Be sure that it is clear to both of you what the photo session will be like. It is important to know where they plan to keep or display the pictures so you can give suggestions on what poses, scenes and accessories are best for it.

  1. Plan the Scenes

If the session will be at the client’s home, ask them if you can possibly go ahead of time to prepare the location. Ask also if there are props they own that you can use (like blankets, knitted cap) to make the picture more meaningful to the family. Tell the parents what scenes you have in mind and make sure you agree.

  1. Make Use of Natural Light

In photographing newborns, it is wise to make use of the light available in the room. Avoid using a flash if possible. A flash can disturb or make the baby feel uneasy. Lessen also the noise coming from your camera so as not to wake the sleeping baby.

  1. Take Macro Shots

Don’t forget to take a picture of the different parts of the baby – cute toes, tiny hands, pouty lips. Marco shots are best taken when the baby is in deep sleep.

  1. Come Prepared

Make a checklist of what you need for the newborn shoot so you don’t forget any. Don’t bring too many of each type of props. Bring a few blankets, some bean bags, pillows, clean toys. Ask your client if there are blankets or toys they own that they want to include in the photo sessions.

Being prepared is not only about getting your stuff ready; it is also about you being totally prepared. Make sure you already have the skills of a newborn photographer. If you still haven’t, just continue practicing and in no time you will surely be a pro at it.
